Coffee is definitely America’s morning beverage of choice. According to USA Today, about 83% of adults drink coffee, averaging about 3 cups of Joe per day. Serious coffee drinkers are pretty intense about their habit. They also have definite ideas about how they take it, whether straight up black with no fuss or liberally laced with cream and sugar. Then there is the other Great Debate: Regular Coffee vs. Caffé Americano.

How Regular Coffee Is Made Vs. Caffé Americano
The difference lies in the extraction method. The coffee you drink at home is generally made with a drip machine. You put the coffee grounds in a filter, add water, and turn the machine on. The forces of gravity send hot water through the grounds and coffee drips out. Once you push the button on the machine, you’re done. You can even go shower or fix breakfast while it brews. The result is a thinner bodied, less bitter, and lighter in color coffee.

How Caffé Americano Is Made?
By contrast, Caffé Americano is made with espresso; a full-flavored, concentrated type of coffee served in small cups. An espresso is made by forcing pressurized, hot water through very finely ground coffee beans. The process produces a reddish-brown froth on the top called “crema”. Caffé Americano is basically espresso served in a larger cup that is then filled with hot water. It’s more diluted than straight espresso, but still much stronger than drip coffee.

The History Of Caffe Americano
According to Primer Magazine, American GI’s stationed in Europe during World War II were first exposed to espresso. Most GIs were used to the brewed version served back home so they put it in a larger cup and added more hot water to the mix. Caffé Americano was born. Today, the American version of espresso has become popular due to the abundance of gourmet coffee houses.
