Need an excuse to eat more dark chocolate? Then you might want to thank the researchers at the Universities of Exeter and Brighton. According to their research, there’s a compound in dark chocolate that can actually rejuvenate inactive senescent cells, making them look and behave like younger cells.
Dark Chocolate contains chemical that improve cell functions
In a study published in the journal BMJ Cell Biology, the research team, comprised of researchers from both universities, have found that by using resveratrol analogs – chemicals found in foods like dark chocolate, red wine, and blueberries, they can activate splicing factors. Splicing factors are important in our bodies because they make sure that the body’s genes perform a vast range of functions, like growing new blood vessels.

But as we get older, they tend to get less efficient or can deactivate entirely, limiting our cells ability to respond to threats – making our organs and tissues more susceptible to diseases as we age.
In this new study, the researchers found that, once the resveratrol analogs had been applied to old cells, they began to divide like young cells again. The cells also grew longer telomeres, which are the caps at the end of each strand of DNA that protect our chromosomes.
Dark Chocolate help cell’s reproduction cycle
As we age, our telomeres get shorter, and that’s the main cause of the age-related breakdown of our cells. If our telomeres get too short, our cells can’t reproduce, our tissues start to degenerate and eventually die off. The cells that tend to be more affected by this shortening include our skin, hair, and immune system because they reproduce more often. If they can’t, our bodies are at risk. And that’s what makes this new study so exciting.
If scientists discover a way to counteract this process, we can live longer, healthier lives, all thanks to a chemical found in dark chocolate.

As researchers continue to study these new findings, as well as conducting experiments based on this data, we can look forward to new and revolutionary treatments for cell degradation. In the meantime, you can add some high-quality dark chocolate to your diet – like the kind you find at Sense Ecuador.
