Beautiful organic necklace made entirely by hand. Black pendant and clasps in tagua nut on a horse hair cord.
THE MAKING OF ORGANIC JEWELRY
This fine necklace was created by Taguarte, an Ecuadorian business named after Tagua, a palm tree nut that grows in the skirts of the Ecuadorian highlands at 56 feet above sea level. Tagua has an incredible resemblance to elephant ivory which makes it an ideal raw material for the design of fine jewelry.
There is no environmental impact in the use of Tagua. After completing its maturation cycle, Tagua seed falls naturally to the ground, where it’s collected by hand. In addition to Tagua, this fine necklace was crafted with horsehair, which is cut from the animal's tail. It naturally grows back pretty much as human hair, causing the least damage to animals.
Under a fair trade framework, Taguarte works hand in hand with small associations of artisans from every corner of the country to obtain the natural materials used in their designs. This way Taguarte honors the hard work of dozens of communities. Horse hair for instance is worked by women who belong to the association of artisans of Guangopolo.
